It has always been extremely well documented throughout Midnight Oil’s rise to the top that they had a rather remarkable mascot. A hand truck. Arguably the most unlikely of mascots and rock band in history has ever had there is a remarkable story regarding how this love affair between the hand truck and the band came about. Midnight Oil were a band which took Australia by storm and rapidly ascended to the top of the charts in record time. There can be no question that without their loyal hand trucks which they placed so much important emphasis on there would not have been the same ascent from the band which they can now look back on with such fondness.
Before one gig Midnight Oil were set to have in Melbourne they encountered a serious problem. Their speakers were unable to get to the location from the other side of the city as the traffic in the city was so bad on that day. After all it was the peak of summer with a music festival on in the middle of the city. There is no doubt that the band’s management should’ve prepared much better considering there was much information documented regarding the likelihood of this causing serious traffic disruption in the city. Midnight Oil placed huge importance on using their own speakers as they believed their elite speakers were a huge factor in helping them stand alone from their rival bands due to the quality of their sound.
The band were crestfallen as they began making their own way through the crowds to get to their gig in time. As they had all had to get out of the van and start walking to the arena, the band had been forced to put on various disguises so they wouldn’t get swamped as they made their way through the crowds. The band still speaks to this day of the immense disappointment they felt at letting down their own fans. They knew that there was no doubt that they would be greatly affected during their performance without their own speakers there helping them to have a sound which differentiated themselves from their competitors so greatly. However, unbeknown to them as they walked through the massive crowds. Their new lucky mascot was coming to the rescue.
To The Rescue
As soon as the band started making their way to the gig on foot. The rest of their team tried to devise a way that they would be able to get these massive speakers through the crowd and to the gig on time so the band didn’t let down their army of fans who had been waiting on them. The hand truck came to the rescue. Weaving through thousands of festival goers these huge speakers made it to the gig in time and the band jumped in delight when they arrived. The shock mixed with delight on every band member’s face was truly a sight to behold and this is how the hand truck was elected as their lucky mascot from that day onwards.
